The twin GRAIL (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory) satellites orbit the Moon to learn more about its gravity and interior composition: MoonKAM will give students the unique opportunity to snap their own photos of the Moon’s surface using cameras on board the spacecraft. Lunedì 17 Dicembre le sonde gemelle Ebb e Flow si schianteranno sulla Luna a 6.000 chilometri orari (1.7 km/s) su una montagna nei pressi del cratere Goldschimdt. Lanciate nel settembre del 2011 le due sonde compongono la missione Grail (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory) grazie alla quale si sta disegnando la mappa della gravità della Luna pià completa e accurata mai realizzata . Mappa che sarà utile per una migliore comprensione di come la Terra e gli altri pianeti rocciosi del sistema solare si sono formati e sono evoluti. I nomi delle due sonde - Flusso (Flow) e Riflusso (Ebb) - sono stati scelti da 28 bambini (foto sotto) della scuola elementare Emily Dickinson di Bozeman, nello stato del Montana, in base al concorso indetto dalla NASA per questo scopo.
